Sus padres fueron Mateo Franulic y Zorka Zlatar. Estudió en el Liceo de Niñas de Antofagasta. Posteriormente, se trasladó a Santiago para estudiar inglés en el Instituto Pedagógico de la Universidad de Chile. Trabajó en la revista Hoy, y tras su cierre trabajó en la prestigiosa revista Ercilla en el año 1941. En ese espacio realizó entrevistas a los personajes más importantes de la política y cultura mundial: Roosevelt, el Mariscal Tito, Juan Domingo Perón, Vittorio Emmanuele Orlando, entre otros. Trabajó también en las emisoras de radios Nacional, Cooperativa, Agricultura y Minería. En el año 1957 fue laureada con el Premio Nacional de Periodismo. Ese mismo año, junto a Orlando Cabrera Leyva, fundaron el Círculo de Periodistas en el que se apoyó la creación de periodismo como carrera universitaria.
