La peste filoxera que destruyó los viñedos y la pobreza consecuente que asoló a la región lo motivó a migrar. Trabajó como bolichero y participó de la Sociedad Croata de Socorros Mutuos y el Club Croata, vinculándose así con la comunidad. Algunos de sus descendientes recuerdan que Iván Mimica era tratado, así como muchos de sus compatriotas, como un “austríaco”, con un claro perfil despectivo. No obstante, su identificador nacional era “dálmata”. Casado con la croata Marija Jelincic, a quien conoció en el barco que los trasladó, los separaba 5 años de diferencia. De su matrimonio tuvieron tres hijos. La opción de volver a Croacia siempre estuvo vigente. No obstante, la Primera Guerra Mundial acabó con esta posibilidad, falleciendo en Chile.
